The Philadelphia Story

Directed By:

Catherine Tilghman and Elizabeth Whealton

Philip Barry's sparkling comedy of manners follows Tracy Lord, a poised, exacting Philadelphia Main Line socialite preparing to marry the respectable but rather dull George Kittredge, a wedding complicated considerably by the reappearance of her charming, hard-drinking ex-husband C.K. Dexter Haven and the arrival of a cynical tabloid reporter, Mike Connor, sent to cover the society wedding undercover. Over the course of a champagne-soaked wedding weekend, Tracy finds her carefully composed self-image, and her certainty about which man she truly loves, thoroughly unsettled as old feelings for Dexter resurface and an unexpected spark ignites with the working-class reporter who was meant to be observing her rather than falling for her. Barry uses the romantic triangle to gently interrogate Tracy's own tendency toward icy perfectionism and moral rigidity, suggesting that true happiness requires accepting both herself and the people she loves as imperfect. Wit, class commentary, and genuine emotional insight combine in a story that ultimately asks what Tracy actually wants once the social expectations are stripped away. Its glittering dialogue and rich central role for its leading lady made it one of the most celebrated American comedies of the twentieth century.
