Les Miserables
The epic musical, based on Victor Hugo's sprawling novel, follows Jean Valjean, a former convict imprisoned for stealing bread, as he breaks parole to build a new, respectable life while being relentlessly pursued across decades by the obsessive, law-worshipping police inspector Javert. Valjean becomes the guardian of Cosette, the orphaned daughter of the tragic factory worker Fantine, and their story becomes entwined with the doomed idealism of a group of student revolutionaries, including the passionate Marius and the self-sacrificing street urchin Eponine, during the June Rebellion of 1832 Paris. Sweeping between intimate personal redemption and the sprawling canvas of revolutionary upheaval, the show explores mercy, justice, love, and sacrifice through a soaring, nearly sung-through score featuring I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own, and Do You Hear the People Sing?. It remains one of the most beloved and successful musicals ever staged, renowned for its emotional scope and its enormous ensemble of principal and chorus roles.
