Noel Coward's classic comedy follows novelist Charles Condomine, who invites the eccentric medium Madame Arcati to his home to conduct a séance for research purposes, only to have her accidentally summon the ghost of his flamboyant, mischievous first wife Elvira. Visible and audible only to Charles, Elvira sets about wreaking gleeful havoc on his marriage to his current wife Ruth, growing increasingly determined to reclaim her husband, even if it means engineering a fatal 'accident' to bring him permanently to the spirit world. As the increasingly complicated love triangle spirals into supernatural farce, both wives, one living and one dead, vie for Charles's affection with escalating comic ruthlessness. Coward's sparkling wit and the play's blend of drawing-room comedy with ghostly mischief have made it one of the most frequently produced English comedies of the twentieth century.
