A romantic comedy about a chronic hypochondriac who becomes convinced, after a routine visit to the doctor, that he is dying. Determined to spare his wife future grief, he secretly sets out to find her a suitable second husband before his supposed demise, enlisting the help of a bewildered neighbor along the way. Naturally, his matchmaking schemes spiral into farcical misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and jealous complications that threaten his marriage far more than his imagined illness ever could. The play is a lighthearted send-up of mid-century anxieties about health, mortality, and marital devotion, built on classic door-slamming farce mechanics and a lovable, meddling fool at its center. It later became a popular Doris Day and Rock Hudson film comedy.
