The Desperate Hours

Directed By:

Miss Dolores Miller (Assistant Director: Daniel J. Whealton)

Joseph Hayes's taut thriller centers on an ordinary suburban family whose home is invaded and held hostage by three escaped convicts on the run from the law. As the desperate criminals wait for a getaway car, the family must find the courage and cunning to protect themselves and eventually outwit their captors, all while maintaining a terrifying facade of normalcy to avoid tipping off the outside world. The play builds relentless suspense from the collision between everyday domestic life and violent criminal menace confined within a single house. Adapted from Hayes's own novel, it became a landmark of American stage and film thrillers, prized for its tight structure and its exploration of fear, courage, and family loyalty under extreme pressure.
