The Detective Story
Sidney Kingsley's drama unfolds over the course of a single, relentless day inside a New York City police precinct, weaving together the overlapping cases, criminals, and victims who pass through its detective squad room. At the center is a hard-nosed detective whose rigid, uncompromising sense of justice is tested when a case forces him to confront his own capacity for cruelty and the limits of black-and-white morality. Around him swirls a vivid ensemble of petty thieves, con men, and desperate people caught up in the machinery of the justice system. The play was groundbreaking for its gritty, procedural realism and its refusal to offer easy answers about crime and punishment, and it later became a celebrated film noir.
