A romantic farce about a mild-mannered dentist who has been telling his devoted secretary and would-be mistress that he is married, purely to avoid commitment, only to be caught in his lie when she suddenly wants to meet his fictitious wife. Scrambling to keep up the ruse, he enlists his real, long-suffering nurse to pose as his spouse, setting off a cascade of mistaken identities, jealous suitors, and romantic complications. Along the way, both the dentist and his nurse discover they may have real feelings for each other after all. The play is a breezy, mistaken-identity comedy of the 1960s, later turned into a popular film starring Walter Matthau, Ingrid Bergman, and Goldie Hawn.
