Anton Chekhov's classic one-act farce "A Marriage Proposal" follows a nervous, hypochondriac landowner who calls on his neighbor to ask for his daughter's hand, only for the visit to dissolve into an escalating, absurd quarrel over a disputed strip of land and the relative merits of their hunting dogs. Chekhov mines rich comedy from the trio's inflated tempers and wounded pride, repeatedly derailing the proposal itself in favor of pettier disputes, before circumstances finally, almost accidentally, push the couple toward engagement.
