Little Shop of Horrors is a darkly comic rock musical, based on Roger Corman's low-budget cult film, about Seymour Krelborn, a meek, put-upon florist's assistant on Skid Row who discovers a strange and interesting new plant, which he names Audrey II after his co-worker and secret crush. The plant's discovery brings Seymour and the failing flower shop unexpected fame, but there's a catch: Audrey II survives only on human blood and flesh, and its increasingly urgent, growing appetite pushes Seymour toward darker and darker moral compromises to keep it fed and his newfound success intact. As the plant grows to monstrous size and its ambitions expand well beyond Seymour's shop, the show builds to a wickedly funny, apocalyptic finale. The score, by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, blends doo-wop, Motown, and rock influences into irresistibly catchy numbers like "Skid Row (Downtown)" and "Suddenly, Seymour," while a trio of street urchins functions as a sly Greek chorus commenting on the action.
