The Odd Couple (Female version)
This is Neil Simon's female-cast adaptation of his classic comedy, resetting the original's mismatched-roommates premise with Olive Madison, a chaotically disorganized divorcee, and Florence Unger, a fastidious, obsessively neat woman freshly separated from her husband, thrown together when Florence moves into Olive's Manhattan apartment. Florence's compulsive tidying, constant fussing, and emotional neediness quickly grate against Olive's slovenly habits and desire for a carefree single life, and the two women's incompatible temperaments provide the same wellspring of comic friction that made the original male version a hit. Their regular gathering of friends for cards and gossip provides additional comic texture and a peanut gallery for the two roommates' escalating domestic squabbles. As tensions mount over dishes left undone, dinners burned or overcooked, and each woman's very different way of coping with heartbreak, their friendship is tested even as it ultimately proves resilient. Simon's shift to a female cast preserves the original's sharp comic rhythms while giving two actresses the chance to inhabit one of American comedy's most beloved odd-couple dynamics.
