Neil Simon's comedy follows newlyweds Paul and Corie Bratter as they move into their tiny, walk-up sixth-floor Manhattan apartment and immediately begin to discover how different their personalities and expectations really are. Corie is impulsive and eager for adventure, while the buttoned-up young lawyer Paul prefers caution and routine, and their clashing temperaments come to a head over a disastrous dinner party with Corie's mother and their eccentric upstairs neighbor. Told with Simon's signature rapid-fire wit, the play is ultimately a warm, optimistic comedy about the growing pains of early marriage and learning to embrace a partner's differences rather than resent them. It was a major Broadway hit and later a popular film starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.
