Bye, Bye Birdie
A musical comedy satirizing 1950s small-town America and the rise of rock and roll, centered on the fictional teen idol Conrad Birdie, who is about to be drafted into the Army. His manager arranges a publicity stunt in which Conrad will give one last all-American girl a goodbye kiss on live television, throwing the sleepy town of Sweet Apple, Ohio into a frenzy, especially the star-struck teenager chosen for the kiss and her jealous boyfriend. Meanwhile, the manager's long-suffering secretary and songwriting partner pushes him to finally choose their relationship over show business. Featuring bouncy, era-defining numbers like Put On a Happy Face and A Lot of Livin' to Do, the show is a warm, high-energy send-up of celebrity culture and generational anxiety about rock and roll's arrival.
