Charley's Aunt

Directed By:

Sherri Trader Hynes

A classic English farce in which a young Oxford student, needing a respectable chaperone so he and his friend can entertain the women they love, persuades his reluctant classmate to disguise himself as his own wealthy aunt from Brazil, 'where the nuts come from.' The impersonation spirals wildly out of control when the real aunt unexpectedly arrives and the fake aunt attracts the unwanted romantic attentions of two older gentlemen, all while the young men scramble to keep their scheme from collapsing. Built on breathless mistaken-identity mechanics and a man in increasingly elaborate drag desperately fending off suitors, the play is one of the most enduringly popular farces in the English language. Its combination of frantic pacing and gender-bending comic chaos has kept it a favorite of community and school theaters for well over a century.
