Thoroughly Modern Millie

A tap-dancing musical comedy set in 1920s New York, following small-town girl Millie Dillmount, who arrives in the city determined to become 'thoroughly modern' by marrying her wealthy boss rather than for love. Her plans are complicated when she falls for a charming but seemingly penniless young man, gets swept up in a white-slavery scheme run by her hotel's seemingly proper matron, and is aided by an aspiring actress friend and a wealthy widow eager to adopt a stenographer. Packed with Jazz Age energy, elaborate tap numbers, and a knowing, comic sendup of 1920s flapper culture, the show pokes affectionate fun at the era's obsession with modernity while ultimately endorsing old-fashioned love over calculated ambition. Based on the 1967 film, the stage musical won the Tony Award for Best Musical for its high-spirited, effervescent charm.
