Foxfire
Directed By:
Lester Huss
A drama about an elderly widow living alone in a ramshackle Appalachian farmhouse, who stubbornly resists her adult son's pleas to sell the land and move to Florida to be near him, even as encroaching strip-mining operations threaten to destroy the mountain she has called home her whole life. Haunted by loving, argumentative memories of her late husband, whom she still talks to, she must weigh her fierce attachment to home, heritage, and independence against the practical realities of old age and a changing Appalachia. The play is a tender, elegiac meditation on land, memory, and the cost of progress, grounded in specific, lived-in Appalachian voice and setting. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for its unsentimental but deeply moving portrait of a woman refusing to let go of who she is.
